Granny Squares Quilt Tutorial

Today we would like to share with you how to make a scrappy granny square block. The finished blocks will measure 9" before sewn into a quilt top. The finished quilt will be twin sized, about 68" x 85".

For one quilt block you will need:

13- 2.5" white squares

12- 2.5" scrap squares

Layout your squares in rows, as shown above.

Sew your squares together into rows. Press.

Square up your block to 9". There should be roughly 1/4" space between the tips of your granny squares and the edge of your block (pictured below):

Note:  Squaring these blocks is a little tricky. Be careful when you are squaring, because sewing can be difficult. Little notches can equal holes, and we wouldn't want that :)

 

Make 80 blocks total. Layout your blocks in 10 rows of 8 blocks each. Sew. Then run outside and do a happy dance :)

Full Blown Summer

We are in full blown Summer mode right now...with only a few weeks left to go. Dang it!

We made a second scrappy summertime quilt, to match the first one we made earlier this summer.

 

 The original scrappy squares quilt is in the mail now. We shipped it off to a new home!

We pulled out charm squares that have been in our sewing room ever since it was a sewing room. Scary, huh? Man, we should get crackin' :)

On a Whim

On a whim we decided late at night that we needed to make another quilt. Bad idea.

So we dug through our scary scrap bucket and started cutting. Good idea.
 

The sewing room? A disaster. Oh well, these Dresden Plates are going to be fab :)

Summer

Summer is flying by and we are enjoying every minute of it. Maybe a little too much.

We are making headway on our vintage quilt. Hooray!

And we've been thrifting to find vintage sheets. They are all washed now and germ free. Phew! Nobody said they liked dirty vintage sheets :)

Happy-Go-Lucky Hopscotch

Camille's hopscotch pattern  has been on the "wanna-make-that" list since we found her cute blog.  When her new fabric line, Happy-Go-Lucky, came out we finally had the motivation to start this quilt.

This Hopscotch pattern is super-duper easy. The templates are a quick cut and there is not a single y-seam involved. Thank heavens.

We chose navy as the accent color to mix things up a bit. It's a good thing too because all of our other quilts are starting to look too uniform. This one sticks out like a sore thumb :)

 We're having a love affair with triangles over here. Help! But, seriously.

Of course we couldn't resist wiggly stitching this quilt. It just wouldn't be the same without it. Our scrappy summery quilt got the wiggly stitch first, and now we're addicted!

We're really crushing on the colors in this one. We'll blame Camille for this whole quilt. :) What would we do without her?

Now run to your nearest fabric store and buy some happy-go-clucky uhh...lucky...fabric. You can tell we type in "Cluck Cluck Sew" too much when that's where our fingers gravitate ;)

We cut a bazillion teensy tiny squares in preparation for a very vintage quilt. Back to Business :)

Pastels

Everywhere we turn this week, we see vintage quilts or, even more tempting, vintage fabric to make vintage quilts. Sigh. So this week we were in the market for some fun pastel prints!

Shopping for vintage fabric is so.much. fun. Look for small scale prints, floral patterns, pastel colors, and you have just about pinpointed "vintage".

Now to just transport us back to the 1930's or 40's..... we'll be all set ;)

Keeping It Simple

We've been keeping it simple around here and haven't done much in the way of quilting. Just basking in summer nothingness and trying to scrounge around for a blog post :)

Ahhhhhh. A stack of quilts sitting pretty. Simply gorgeous.

Snowball Quilt Tutorial

The Snowball quilt block has been around forever and is one of our favorites. It is a super easy block that even a beginner can tackle! Finished quilt measures 49.5" x 55".

Materials Needed:
10 Fat Quarters (We used 5 different fabrics, 2 fq's each)
1 yard white fabric
3/8 yard binding fabric
Batting
Backing Fabric

From each Fat Quarter, cut 9- 6" squares, yielding a total of 90- 6" squares. From the white fabric, cut 18- 2" strips. Sub-cut the 2" strips into 2" squares, yielding 360- 2" squares.

For each snowball block, you will need 4- 2" squares and 1- 6" square. Draw a diagonal line to mark all of the white squares.

Place a white square in one corner of the 6" square and sew along the drawn line.

Trim away the excess, creating a 1/4" seam allowance.

Repeat in all four corners.

Iron your seams flat and you are done!

Sew the snowball blocks in 10 rows of 9 blocks.

Finally bought us (we're the same size!) some polka-dot pants.  Thank you Target. We owe you.

At least it isn't a close-up of the bottom half of this closet :) Then you would never read our blog again. Ever. You'd book it to the phone and report us to Hoarders the TV show as soon as you saw the picture :)

After a long day of running around, we came and found this lovely in the mail:

Isn't it the worst thing in the world to unwrap pre-cuts? Now we just need a marathon day so that it can be turned into a quilt, then we won't feel as bad about the unwrapping part ;)
